Today i found an interesting article for linux like people… talking about TUX (the linux mascot). How many of you knows that name came from (T)orvalds (U)ni(X) ? Hehe.
This article will make a little light about the beginning and evolution of linux mascot/logo and also… the Linus Torvalds e-mail related to that contest of choosing linux logo.
here’s some quotes from that article:

Penguin as logo/mascot for Linux was discussed first in early 1996 by several people in the linux-kernel mailing list. The idea of such mascot came from Alan Cox first. Among many other suggestions made by different people there were parodies of other operating system logos, sharks or even eagles. You can find them here. Some of them:

Here is this Linus’ email:

    Re: Linux Logo prototype
Linus Torvalds (torvalds@cs.helsinki.fi)
Thu, 9 May 1996 17:48:56 +0300 (EET DST)

Somebody had a logo competition announcement, maybe people can send their ideas to a web-site..

Anyway, this one looks like the poor penguin is not really strong enough to hold up the world, and it’s going to get squashed. Not a good, positive logo, in that respect..

Now, when you think about penguins, first take a deep calming breath, and then think “cuddly”. Take another breath, and think “cute”. Go back to “cuddly” for a while (and go on breathing), then think “contented”.

    With me so far? Good..

The first person called the penguin “Tux” was James Hughes who said that it stood for “(T)orvalds (U)ni(X)”. Tux was designed for a Linux logo contest. Confusingly, there were actually three separate contests and Tux didn’t win any of them. This is why Tux is formally known as the Linux mascot and not the logo. Tux was created by Larry Ewing using the first publicly released version (0.54) of GIMP. It was released by him under the following condition:

Permission to use and/or modify this image is granted provided you acknowledge me lewing@isc.tamu.edu and The GIMP if someone asks.

Top Ten Reasons Why the Ubuntu Linux OS has gained such great popularity

What is Ubuntu?

Ubuntu is a community developed, linux-based operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. It contains all the applications you need – a web browser, presentation, document and spreadsheet software, instant messaging and much more.

The Ubuntu Promise

Ubuntu will always be free of charge, including enterprise releases and security updates.

Ubuntu comes with full commercial support from Canonical and hundreds of companies around the world.

Ubuntu includes the very best translations and accessibility infrastructure that the free software community has to offer.

Ubuntu CDs contain only free software applications; we encourage you to use free and open source software, improve it and pass it on.

Just below it’s the 10 reasons i promised. I “challenge” you to reply to them, or comment it.

10. The fact that Ubuntu has a stable release each sixth month. Makes Ubuntu an Operating System to count on for the future. You can rest assured that six months after a new stable release, there will be yet another one.

9. The low cost. Ubuntu costs you absolutely nothing whatsoever. You pay nothing and get a truly powerful and useful operating system.

8. the security. There are few known viruses, trojans nor other security threats. That makes Ubuntu useful out of the box. People do not need to worry about visiting bad websites or running strange programs.

7. The availability. Sites such as shipit provides a physical copy of the disc, shipped to you for free, no matter where you live. The CD .iso is also available for regular download

6. The all increasing user friendliness of this powerful OS.
Many people that are new to computers in general find that they can easily use the OS to perform common tasks such as surfing the web and checking their e-mail. Even adding new programs is absolutely no problems at all.

5. The flexibility. No matter if you’re a complete newbie or a systems administrator, you will find that the many tools which comes withe the Ubuntu GNU/Linux OS enables you to tailor the system for your needs. New Ubuntu (version) combined with great tools such as Automatix makes it really easy to install codecs, and other non-free software which many people use.

4. the attention. Most modern, Computer interested Windows, Mac OS X and all of the Linux users know about Ubuntu. Some of them even has an opinion about the OS. Ubuntu has gotten a lot of attention. It is a fact that the Ubuntu OS have been written about in newspapers across the globe.

3. The maturity. the desktop environments Gnome, KDE and Xfce4 has become really user friendly and powerful the last few years. They are stable and reliable.

The Debian apt package manager has always been a really great tool for installing new programs, and combined with Synaptic or Adept, it has also become really easy to use and to master. The aptitude package manager is promising as well.

2. The fact that Ubuntu is rapidly growing to be one of the most well-documented operating systems on the web. No matter what you try to do, Transfer music to an iPod, make use of the ntfs partitions, Install vmware or reconfigure grub to fit your needs, there will be an Ubuntu specific HOWTO one web search away.

1. The friendliness of the community. Ubuntu means Humanity to others, and it clearly shows in the way newbies and others who’ve got problems with what ever Ubuntu or Linux-related problems they have, are met by others in the Ubuntu community. No matter if you post a question in the Ubuntu forums, or on their official IRC-channel, people will do their best efforts to help you learn and solve your problems. This is truly what makes Ubuntu such a great Operating system.
